Milies, Greece

Milies, Greece

Milies Greece

Perched on the verdant slopes of Mount Pelion, Milies is a tranquil village that combines stone-built charm, mountain air, and glimpses of the Aegean Sea. Narrow, cobbled alleys wind between traditional mansions with red-tiled roofs, shaded by plane trees and fragrant jasmine. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down: locals chat in the central square, church bells echo softly across the valley, and the only real “traffic” is the occasional herd of goats. The heart of Milies is its lively main square, anchored by the historic church of Pammegiston Taxiarchon. Step inside to admire centuries-old frescoes and a richly carved wooden iconostasis. Just a short walk away, the old public library and reading room—one of the first in Greece—hosts rare manuscripts and offers a glimpse into the village’s intellectual past. Cafés and tavernas spill onto the square, serving strong Greek coffee, local wine, and homemade pies filled with cheese or wild greens. A highlight of any visit is the legendary Pelion steam train, known as “Moutzouris.” The stone railway station of Milies marks the end of a scenic route that snakes across arched bridges and along lush hillsides from Ano Lechonia. Even if the train isn’t running during your stay, the tracks and surrounding paths make a beautiful walking route, with panoramic views and photo stops at every turn. Milies also serves as an ideal base for outdoor activities. Well-marked hiking trails connect the village to neighboring Pelion settlements and down to the sea, where you can cool off at nearby beaches like Kala Nera. After a day of walking or exploring, return to Milies for a slow evening: a meal of local specialties such as spetsofai (spicy sausage stew) and fresh salads, followed by a quiet stroll under a sky bright with stars.
